Music - Live Perfomances - On the Radio - Email
The piano sat against the wall for years, just a piece of inherited furniture that was looked at, had things set upon it, but never played. Then one day out of boredom, Tim Spivey began "banging around" on it. He discovered that if he skipped every other white key it sounded good. He also discovered that the black keys had a "richer" sound. He discovered something else, when he played, what was later defined for him as chord progressions, he heard melodies in his head. He began recording these wordless melodies on his Sony reel to reel tape recorder. He played one of them for his good friend and softball teammate, Steve Hunter. Steve made a copy of the melody on an old Wallensack reel to reel and took it home. Steve came back a few days later with the words to "Mighty Fine Day." It was primitive but "catchy." Thus was born the musical collaboration that is today known as "Spihunt."
The guys grew up body surfing the "Wedge" in Newport Beach, and listening to all those great west coast sounds. Tim was absorbed by the melodies and harmonies of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. "I would listen to their beautiful harmonies over and over on my earphones. Each time I would try to isolate a different part. I used to listen to the radio and instead of singing along with the lead singer, I would harmonize with him." Steve was a theater major. Words came easily for him. "We really compliment each other," Hunter said. "Timmy really hears great melodies and harmonies and I hear words." Add a little east coast Four Seasons' edge and a lot of four part acapella church music and it's easy to see where Spihunt is coming from musically.
A chance encounter with Bill Silva, the original "music man" at Candix Records, led to a series of recording sessions. Silva's untimely death caused the duo to build their own recording studio in Tim's garage. Both men had other careers, but they worked hard on the weekends to develop their own sound. A series of "garage" CD's were created. Each CD demonstrated huge growth over the previous. Finally the guys got serious. They purchased an AMPEX 16 track 2 inch tape recorder, remodeled their studio, brought in gifted musicians, and began the "I Know The Feelin'" project. After eighteen months the project is completed. Fun "feel good" music is back. This is the kind of music that makes you look forward to riding in your car just so you can hear it. It is once again OK to listen to music that makes you want to joyfully sing along. Melody is back. Vocal harmony is cool again. Spihunt is the total package. They write all of the songs, sing all of the parts, produce all of the cuts, and mix all of the tracks that is leading a revival of music that just makes you feel good again. We need it; It's about time.
